There Is Still Hope

If you’ve taken the first drug in a medical abortion and regret your decision, you may still have time to act. At Lakeside Women’s Clinic, we understand that decisions made under stress can change, and you may have second thoughts after taking mifepristone.

Our compassionate staff can help you understand your options and connect you with abortion pill reversal (APR) via a referral.

What Is Abortion Pill Reversal?

A medical abortion typically involves two drugs: mifepristone and misoprostol. Mifepristone blocks the hormone progesterone to terminate the pregnancy. Misoprostol, taken later, causes uterine contractions that expel the pregnancy.

If only mifepristone has been taken, it may be possible to reverse or counteract its effects by administering more progesterone into the body. This is known as abortion pill reversal (APR).

Progesterone has been safely used for decades to help women at risk of miscarriage, and early research shows that APR can successfully continue pregnancies in many cases. In fact, in one published study, women who began progesterone treatment within 72 hours of taking mifepristone had a 64-68% success rate.

Time Matters

The earlier treatment begins, ideally within 24 to 72 hours after taking mifepristone, the greater the chance of success. However, results have been seen even after that timeframe.

Lakeside Women’s Clinic does not perform APR on-site but provides referrals to qualified providers through the Abortion Pill Rescue Network (APRN). Once connected to a provider, you’ll discuss your situation and begin the protocol.
