Confirm Pregnancy Location
An ultrasound provides a digital image that can show you the location of the pregnancy. If it is located outside of the uterus, this is an ectopic pregnancy (usually located in a fallopian tube).
An ectopic pregnancy is non-viable and threatens tubal rupture. This should be treated immediately and requires a procedure other than an elective abortion.
Confirm Gestational Age
After confirming your pregnancy test, an ultrasound can confirm your pregnancy’s gestational age (you may be surprised how far along you are!). This is essential for knowing what procedures you are eligible for.
For example, the abortion pill is only FDA-approved through 10 weeks of gestational age.
Determine Your Pregnancy’s Viability
You have likely already confirmed your pregnancy with a positive pregnancy test. However, this doesn’t always mean that your pregnancy is viable.
At-home tests are urine-based and designed to detect hCG, a hormone associated with pregnancy. This hormone is still detectable even a few days after a miscarriage, so an ultrasound can confirm whether or not the pregnancy is still viable.
Up to 26% of pregnancies end in miscarriage, so an ultrasound helps you know how to move forward.
